Thirteen people were poisoned last week by eating tomatoes in Sabah district of Al-Baidah Governorate. According to one of the victims father, Ali Saleh al-Barie the tomatoes were from Rada'a city and were big in size. He mentioned that the size of the tomatoes attracted all customers. He says that while his family of two wives, six boys, and four girls were gathered to eat breakfast that contained the tomatoes, his youngest child Jalal was spinning and became in an unconscious condition immediately after he finished eating. Thirteen people who ate from the tomatoes were all transmitted to Al-Amal Private Hospital in Rada'a and received treatment there. " When I worked in the farm picking tomatoes, it was common to see farmers spraying pesticides on the field without any health concerns. It was also common for children to eat tomatoes without washing them " said a 35 worker at tomatoes farm Ahmed Mosed al-Sabahi. Since the absence of regulations, farmers under no inspection from the government endanger consumers' lives when using dangerous pesticides." During the last five years, hearing of death from pesticides is increased as farmers are using pesticides and other genetic means to increase their productions", said a 53 year old farmer Ahmed Hassan al-Araj of Rada'a concluded. |
