The grenade attack that killed and injured nearly thirty near Sana'a University this week is a strong reason why the government should play a bigger role in banning weapons in major cities. Students were just passing by not knowing what was ahead of them, when suddenly the explosion caused fear for students who were even walking a mile away. Yes, the rate of weapons and attacks on civilians has decreased over the last two years, especially since the government started its campaign against weapons and implementing the gun control policy and that was good news. However, what happened this week gives the government a wakeup call demanding them to do more in securing the lives of innocent civilians. Nearly 10 of the injured were kids. What made me surprised is that security officials demanded that the injured and sick to pay for the costs of transpiration to the hospital and also for their medical treatment, even though the sick were taken to governmental hospitals. In Jawf, Marib, and Baitha where most of the country's weapons exist, a large difference has been witnessed as locals who usually walked with weapons during the day are starting to hesitate to do so now that the campaign against carrying weapons is in progress. In the end, we appreciate the government's efforts in its hard work for limiting weapons in major cities, but we also tell them that more effort is needed if a weapon free society is the goal.
