Eye witnesses told Yemen Post that volcanic vapors are emitting from Al-Hashab area (known now as Sahn Al-Jin), some four kilometers to the north of Mareb city. The area accommodates a military camp and air defense units. Meanwhile, a team from the Dhamar-based National Seismological Observatory Center was sent to the area for studying and monitoring the possibility of any volcanic or seismic activities. Professor of Volcanoes and Geology at Sana'a University Mohammed Al-Qadasi indicated that Mareb province is located within a volcanic area which has been active for 2 million years, adding these volcanic vapors resulted from fissures in the area's earth crust. Al-Qadasi also noted that volcanoes occur due to pressured magma deep within the earth and this magma pushes through crust vents and fissures especially following the occurrence of earthquakes. Soldiers positioned in the area expressed worry over any volcanic eruption especially when the leaders prevented them from leaving the area. Sources indicated that the mount from which vapors emit accommodates an air force site with a radar and operations unit. It also overlooks a site belonging to Yemen Oil Company as well as another one abandoned by Hunt Oil Company. Military forces affiliated with the Republican Guard Brigades prevented curious citizens from reaching the area. Recently, some vapors have been noticed by locals while trying to dig water wells and some wells bring out very hot water. Early on September, a volcano erupted in uninhabited Jabal Al-Tair (Bird Mount) Island off Yemen's northern coast and killed four soldiers and several others missing. It remained for quite long time sending lava and ashes. Experts stress that authorities should be prepared enough for any possible eruption of volcanoes in the area to avoid any human or material losses, hinting they should keep on alert in order not to repeat what happened earlier in Jabal Al-Tair where a deaf ear was turned to the warning of soldiers.
