Parliament Speaker Sheikh Yahya Al-Ra'ei assured that parliament role will be confined to electing the members of the Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum (SCER) in case the political players agree on its formation.

Al-Ra'ei added that parliament will resort to constitution and law to form the SCER once the parties do not reconcile and reach an agreement concerning the formation of the new SCER.

Joint Meeting Parties warned earlier the ruling party, General People Congress, against attempting to form the SCER outside the agreement of principles signed earlier by both sides.

According to observers, the controversy over SCER formation could lead some opposition parties including Islah to boycott the forthcoming parliamentary elections due to be conducted in April 2009.
