In a recent statement, Dutch Embassy in Sana’a stated there has been a misunderstanding of Dutch Minster of Development Cooperation Bert Koenders statement made on Thursday and prior to his departure to his country as for his country’s intention to move Somali Refugees’ camp from Lahj’s Kharaz Camp to another country. The statement distributed to media outlets indicated that Koenders meant that the camp might be moved to another location inside the republic because the current location is not good. It went on to say that Dutch government will continue their support to Yemen’s efforts aiming to face the inflow of African refugees to yemen and under the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) whose work is described as dysfunctional specially following the different sit-ins and protests staged by African refugees in Yemen. Earlier to departure, Koenders expressed his concern over the conduct of security officers in Kharaz Camp for Somali Refugees as they used force to quell the Somali refugees’ protests. The minister was also met at the camps gate with citizens belonging to Howirb and made a peaceful sit-in a week ago demanding compensations for the lands used as a camp for Somali refugees and owned earlier by Al-Shat Cooperative Association before it was confiscated after 1994 war. In related news, the medical center employees went on strike after UNHCR showed no readiness to address their issue of increasing salaries at 50 percent together with not receiving their salaries since last December. Still, there is a wide debate over the performance of the UNHCR that receives much international assistance to help ease the bad situation of refugees whose numbers increase day after day. During his last visit to Germany, President Saleh criticized the weak performance of UNHCR.
