Political Security Apparatuses, Taiz Branch, arrested comedian and humorist Fahd Al-Qarni hinting that his arrest was made under high directives. Media sources indicated that Al-Qarni was subjected to torture in the political security prisons; however, such allegations were refuted by the chairman of the political security in Taiz. Several lawsuits have been filed against Al-Qarni for personal defaming and slandering of President Saleh. Sources told the Yemen Post that arresting Al-Qarni was made against his continuous violation of law and personal defamation and slander through the unlicensed cassettes he produces or through the festivals he attends. He also mocks Saleh's speeches, something considered to be a stark violation of law. The sources added Al-Qarni was arrested after he failed many times to stand before prosecution or judicial authorities despite the different summon orders issued by the prosecution. Security sources stated that Al-Qarni is arrested under high directives for constant violations of law and hinted they will refer him to prosecution for further investigations. Head of Islah Party's Media Circle Fathi Al-Azab considered Al-Qarni detention to be illegal and unconstitutional, calling on security forces to secure an immediate release of Al-Qarni and respect the effective laws. Meanwhile, Islah Party in Taiz threatened on Saturday to stage sit-ins and demonstrate if security authorities do not release Al-Qarni, hinting his albums and participation in festivals are part of the freedom of expression guaranteed under Yemeni constitution and laws.
