Security sources revealed that Yemen has received 289 Somali refugees during this month including 89 women and 12 children and noted that the number is on the increase. Over 72 Somali refugees, including 24 women, arrived in Haramout province's Broom coast on Wednesday. Upon arrival, the security authorities handed them over to UNHCER representative. The refugees were moved to Kharaz Camp in Lahj where refugees are leading a very hard life. Addressing the regional conference on Refugees Protection and International Immigration held recently in Sana'a, Foreign Minister Abu Bakr Al-Qirbi mentioned that there are a half million Somali refugees in Yemen. Al-Qirbi added that only a few refugees register their names, while most of them do not register and they exist across the country. He also called for regional countries and the international community to help Yemen face the constant flow of Somali refugees into the country. According to UNHCER, over 18,000 African refugees, mostly Somalis, have arrived in Yemen over the last few months. About 400 refugees drowned before reaching Yemeni lands. |
