I met earlier this week with the lawyer of over a dozen Yemenis detained in Guantanamo and was sad to hear from him that after long discussions with Yemeni officials, Yemen still refuses to accept the detainees that are being held in Guantanamo on the excuse that the conditions set by the U.S. government are not realistic. Let's say that the Yemeni government is right in not accepting the American conditions, but didn’t they receive previous detainees from Guantanamo while agreeing on the same conditions? These prisoners are put under intensive mental or physiological suffering on a daily basis, while the Yemeni government refuses to accept them back. Why? Only because it wants to show the United States that it has a strong word. This is ridiculous. If you wanted to show the United States that you are strong, it shouldn't be on delaying the acceptance of Yemenis who are detained and suffer every day, but rather show your power and strength by not asking the United States for financial help every time you meet their leaders. So, what I want to say to Yemeni officials is to picture one of their relatives or children in the position of the detainees and the sufferings they go through. Every day is like a year for them, and every week in Guantanamo is a life time experience of torture, abuse and mistreatment. |
