A recently established radical Islamic group known as Islamic Jihad Organization claimed responsibility for Friday’s attack and threatened to launch more attack targeting every corrupt part in Yemen. Official sources revealed that a suicide attack rocked the Sayoun's Central Security headquarters, leaving behind two (one policeman and the attacker) killed and another 17 injured including six women. However other sources mentioned to the Yemen Post that the number of deaths was higher and could reach 10 in total. The attack occurred early Friday when a man, suspected to be an Al-Qaeda affiliate, rammed an explosive-laden car into the Central Security compound in Hadharmaut's Sayun city, some 700 km (430 miles) to the east of the capital Sana'a. According to the state-owned Saba News agency, the blast took place on Friday's early morning, 6:00 am and caused damages to the complex buildings and other nearby houses. A security source noted that security apparatuses have launched investigations into the attack, hinting that 'extreme terrorist elements' are behind the attack. The source continued that the attack targets the souls of innocent people and seeks to disturb the social peace, stressing that the attackers take the religion as a cover for their terrorist and criminal acts which opposes Islamic teachings and morals. Hadramout Governor Salim Ahmed Al-Khanbashi blamed the attack on Al-Qaeda, hinting that the blast has the touches of Al-Qaeda especially in its tactics. Al-Khanbashi further emphasized that this terrorist act is not different from past terrorist operations implemented by Al-Qaeda Organization in Hadramout and Mareb. Early last month, Islamic Jihad called for canceling Sana'a Summer Festival staged annually in the Old City of Sana'a and hosts Arab and Yemeni singing stars. It accuses the organizers of corrupting minds through singing and the mixing of sexes. Al-Qaeda Organization wing in Yemen has been following different tactics to implement its operations in the country, especially when tourists are easy targets. Under tight security measures around foreign agencies and embassies, the organization resorted to attacking oil facilities and tourist sites. Attacking oil facilities is part of Al-Qaeda strategic plans that targets oil industry and production. Armed men, allegedly from Al-Qaeda, attacked on January 18 a convoy of Belgian tourists in Hadramout's Al-Hajreen area, killing two Belgian tourists and wounding others. A similar attack took place on July 2, 2007 when seven Spanish tourists were killed outside the gate of Belquis Shrine in Mareb. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for both operations. |
