  Yemen needs 787,000 residential units until 2010

Yemen is in need for 787 thousand of residential units to cover up for the needs until 2010 and the existing gap is that of 214,000 houses, according to housing sector at Ministry of Public Works and Roads. The total number of houses in Yemen reaches 2.6 million including 433 thousand tent and tinplate houses.

 

The same report hinted that depreciation percentage in the existing houses is 5 percent, something equal to 130,000 houses. Thus, the total demand over housing is 787,000.

 

It added the ministry plans to invest 24.6 billion in building houses for nomadic, limited-income and destitute people and youth, maintaining that 136 residential units are currently built in Hawrem, Al-Manahil and Al-Hazm at a total cost of YR 531 million. Further, the ministry will implement 330 residential units for nomads at YR 1 billion in Al-Maharah, Um Al-Sahara, Rumah, Thamoud and Al-Kathiri.

 

Moreover, the ministry is planning to build 1624 residential units at YR 6.3 billion and to be implemented over the three coming years in Sana'a, Aden, Hadramout, Al-Hodeidah, Lahj, Al-Maharah and Shabwa.

 

Meanwhile, the report indicated that over 13.000 residential units for youth will be built within the frame of Al-Saleh Residential Project at YR 10.5 billion and the project covers Aden, Haramout, Taiz, Al-Hodeidah, Lahj, Al-Maharah, Sahbwa, Mareb, Sa'ada, Al-Jawf, Abyan, and Hajjah.

 

Within the project aiming to build houses for destitute people, 2500 residential units will be built in most governorates.  

 

The ministry is also planning to rebuild and disaster-damaged areas including building 100 residential units for Al-Dhafair village residents, along with building houses war-affected Sa'ada inhabitants and compensating those owning random houses in Faj Attan and building Yemeni village in Indonesia for Tsunami-affected people.
