The Japanese International Cooperation Agency organized on Tuesday in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health and Population a workshop on the national strategy for nutrition.

The goal of the workshop which was held at the Sana’a International Hotel was to develop the strategy deemed the base for implementing nutrition activities in the country.

The strategy was set out by experts from the Sana’a University and the United Nations Children's Fund – UNICEF.

During the workshop, the participants discussed the issues of nutrition in Yemen and the reasons and consequences of malnutrition besides strategies to deal with the problems of malnutrition.

The discussions contributed to modify the strategy text.

According to a study issued by the Family Health Division at the Public Health and Population Ministry in 2005, 50% of children below five years in Yemen suffer from dwarfism and 45% suffer from low weight.

The workshop affirmed that malnutrition does not only affect health but also the ability of learning and productivity as well as economic development in a country.

The workshop produced recommendations urging the government to give priority to addressing the issues associated with malnutrition.

The workshop was attended by representatives from the World Health Organization, the Sana’a University, Non-governmental Organizations, Private Sector and the Ministry of Public Health and Population.
