Vice President Abdo Rabu Hadi met with Yemen's opposition Joint Meeting Parties for the first time since Saleh left to Saudi Arabia for treatment. Officials who attended the meeting described it as very positive and fruitful. The opposition said that the vice president was very cooperative and was willing to reach an agreement.
Hasan Zaid, general secretary of the opposition Haq Party and an official who met the vice president today said that the vice president wanted to reach agreements withe the opposition but needed time to do so. "The VP wanted the opposition to help him in securing the country from violence first. He was dealing with the opposition parties as a political partner rather than an enemy like President Saleh used to."
He added, "The VP said that any transition during these days will only cause more chaos and people are not ready, while the streets are full of gunmen."
"We agreed with the VP to end all media escalations and today the opposition and the ruling party will release a joint press release as a sign from both sides that they want to ease the tension in the country."
Zaid said that when the opposition discussed the GCC proposal, the VP seemed insistent that it is the only solution that can transfer power in Yemen peacefully and safely.
"The VP said that it is not his duty to sign the GCC proposal and since Saleh has already agreed to sign it, there is no reason for him to sign it."
On the hand, the opposition parties are desperately trying to keep the revolution youth on their side while angering them by meeting with the vice president today. "The opposition are destroying the revolution. We informed them that the VP meeting is a strategy by the ruling party to kill the revolution and they insisting on going," said Riyadh Saleh, a pro democracy leader in Sana'a.
The United States, European Union, and Gulf ambassadors were key players in efforts to join the vice president with the opposition, though they did not attend the meeting between the VP and opposition.
Mohammed Basendowah, the president of the opposition Dialogue Committee, said that negotiations with the government will not be successful because the vice president does not have real authority with Presidents Saleh's son and nephews choosing his every step. "Even if we reach an agreement, the president's family still control the military and security forces and are willing to kill thousands for the sake of staying in power."
Basendowah added that the youth protesters were responsible for solving the Yemeni crises 3/4 of the way, and it was the duty of the opposition to finish off the last quarter peacefully to avoid bloodshed and ensure that the Yemeni revolution stays peaceful. "We want to solve the crisis but not the way that is happening now."
While the meeting was ongoing at the vice president's residence, the organizing committee for the youth revolution condemned the opposition meeting with the vice president and called on the United States and Saudi Arabia to stand with the revolution and end calls for giving Mr Saleh immunity from the crimes he committed.
Tareq Shami, the spokesperson for the ruling General People Congress party said that the meeting at the vice president's residence was very fruitful and both sides discussed on ways to solve the Yemeni crisis. "Everyone wants to end the crisis in Yemen and the ruling party is being very cooperative." Shami said that the vice president insisted that both sides end the media war and open channels for a political agreement. "Today's meeting was only the beginning and more points need to be clarified to ensure peaceful and constitutional transition of power in Yemen," he said.
Prior to the meeting, Mohammed Mutawakil, general secretary of the opposition Popular Front party said that the vice president refused to meet the opposition JMP until the security issues in Yemen are solved. "He did not want to meet the opposition. We know he is pressured by those above him who have the real authority," said Mutawakil.
