Abu Bakr al-Qirby, Yemen's Foreign Minister, accused the Opposition on Tuesday of pushing the population to revolt against the government as he believed they did not come to term the 2006 presidential elections. When addressing the United Nations General Assembly, al-Qirby when further in his rhetoric, arguing that the Opposition was inciting more violence and that left unchecked those dissident elements could plunge Yemen into a civil war. According to the minister, the opposition would have fomented the popular uprising in a bid to snatch the presidency from Saleh, the only constitutionally legitimate president of Yemen. "They turned to maneuvers, including violence, that threaten (to lead to) the outbreak of civil war and devastating conflicts in Yemen."In the same breath, the foreign minister reiterated Saleh's commitment to sign the GCC proposal which enounces the mechanisms of Yemen's transfer of power and would signal the departure of president Saleh as Head of the State. Back in Yemen, al-Qirby's passionate statement to the U.N was received as further proof of the government's unwillingness to cooperate with its people demands, and more importantly to recognize its own responsibility in the matter. As the government continues to point the finger at the Opposition, blaming them for the recent bout of violence, the National Council for the Yemeni Revolution is calling for more peaceful demonstrations. As people are being shot in the streets of Sana'a, the capital, the government continues to accuse defected General Ali Mohsen's soldiers, maintaining that no government troops were ever ordered to shoot at unarmed protesters. In the hospitals, hundreds of injured are refuting the regime's claims, saying that it was the Republican Guards who shot them and shelled them. “The opposition powers used the tidal wave of change being witnessed by Arab countries to prevent Yemen from achieving democratic change through elections,” he said. “However, we respected the demands of the youth and we started a dialogue with them in order to respond to their request” said the foreign minister, closing his argument.
