An official report has indicated that tuberculosis affects about 12,000 Yemeni people a year, 1400 out of whom die and the others are treated successfully.
The report by the National Tuberculosis Centre and the National Health Education and Population Center of the Public Health and Population Ministry said the TB rates have been decreased from 137 cases per 100.000 people in 1990 to 49 cases in 2010.
The progress in tackling this disease happened with support from international agencies, said the report, which was discussed in a seminar on Wednesday in Sanaa.
The National Tuberculosis Centre has discovered about 60% of the people with TB and treated about 80% of them successefully, it added.
Among key factors for the spread of this disease is poor awareness among the public and ignoring the instructions to use medications, the center said.
Separately, the USAID signed on Thursday with Yemen an agreement for $37 million in extra aid to developmental projects including health ones.
The aid comes within the US commitment to help Yemen overcome all challenges during the current period, the USAID country manager Robert Wilson said after the signing at the Planning Ministry.
