The Houthi Militant Group on Saturday abducted Director of Yemen President's Office Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak in what appeared to be a move to derail the political process further. Yemeni officials said the abduction was mainly aimed at putting pressure on president Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi to modify the new constitution and meet other Houthi demands. The preliminary draft of the new constitution was finished earlier this month. It was prepared in accordance with the outcomes of the national dialog conference. In a statement claiming the responsibility for the kidnapping, the Houthi Group said it had arrested bin Mubarak to prevent any attempts to derail the implementation of the peace and national partnership agreement. It threatened more actions. Meanwhile, observers warned that the illegal Houthi acts will inevitably kill the new constitution in the bud especially as the group is continuing to tighten its grip on power and expand in cities by force. Najeeb Ghalab, a politics professor at Sanaa University and Chairman of the Al-Jazeerah Studies Center, said what Houthis are doing will not only affect the constitution preparation but also the future of the country in general. "The crux of the problem, however, lies in the silence of president Hadi toward Houthi violations. Hadi always vows to make all transition requirements a success but takes no action to prevent attempts of some factions to spoil everything," Ghalab said. "His contradiction, maybe collusion, is obvious and can't be justified". The Houthi Group has rejected some of the consensually agreed outcomes of the dialog including that Yemen becomes a federation of six regions. Observers said Houthis represent the killer poison to the political process. The peace and partnership agreement on which Houthis pin hope to achieve their ambitions was against the dialog itself, observers said. Fuad Alsalahi, a political sociology professor at Sanaa University, said the constitution was prepared in a suspicious way which makes it suit the test and serve goals of some powerful groups including the Houthi. "I am wondering, what do Houthis want more when they reject the constitution now," Alsalahi said. "I think Yemen will not achieve something at a time when we see the factions which held the dialog now reject what they had already agreed to during the dialog," he added. The group wants a federation of two regions and that some provisions in the new constitution be modified, reports said today. Observers said it is unfair and not helpful that a single group tries to swallow power in a wrong way and makes a decision on the people's issues. They demanded strict measures to address continued Houthi violations before the political process collapses and then only the war option will remain. "It is better or rather a duty that Hadi forms a military council to which he should hand power," Ghalab said. "The military council can respond to all threats well," he added.
