A press report published in September 26, the official mouthpiece of the Defense Ministry stated that under the direction of President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi, the ministerial committee vested with the task of formulating an apology to former South Yemen and the Houthis (a reformed rebel group based in the northern province of Sa'ada) had approved a final version.
The draft will now be presented to the Prime Minister, Mohammed Salem Basindwa and President Hadi before becoming official.
The move is rather significant as it aims to seal once and for old feuds and recriminations against the central government and allow Yemen to move united toward the final phase of its power transition.
Now that the NDC representatives are working toward finalizing the text of Yemen's new constitution before it can presented to the nation through a referendum, the government thought important to seal the country's unity by admitting to past wrongs and thus allow factions to move away from old rancor and talks of secession.
Minister of State and member of the Ministerial Committee in charge of the apology draft, Hassan Ahmad Sharaf al-Din explained that the apology would be made by the coalition on behalf of all previous governments since 1994. He added that war victims would be compensated under the transitional justice law.
