Yemen Media and Studies Center (YMS) warns of the exacerbation of poverty in Yemen, after specialize International researches signs shown an erosion of a new segment of Yemenis below the national poverty line, reported media outlets.
The center added that at the time the world celebrates the World Food Day, the food is still out of reach of many Yemenis. More than one out of three Yemenis suffer from chronic hunger, the study said.
Yemeni economic still in recession; mainly, after the global food crisis, which had a negative impact on the Yemeni people.
The global food crisis which started in 2008 doubled the prices of the commodities in Yemen. However, the reduction of oil prices, the main source of the country has a negative impact in the local economy as well.
The current economical policies have increased the number of poor and caused a decline in the family's income, the study said adding that, food prices are now higher than were in the last year.
The study conducted by the Yemen Media and Studies Center (YMS) last August showed that the income level of three-quarters of the Yemeni families adversely affected during the year 2009.
Meanwhile, the 2009 Human Development Report revealed that in Yemen 41.8 live below the national poverty line, while 46.6 percent live on less than two dollars a day.
The Center indicated that the recent survey conducted on consumer spending in Yemen showed expedition of poverty among Yemenis who are living under harsh economical conditions.
About 82% of Yemeni families can not cover the minimum expenses of daily life, compared with 17% who are living in wealth, the study added.
The Center stated that the statistical evidences indicate that 83% of the Yemeni population is facing difficult living conditions, while 17% obtain the wealth and its pleasures.
