Building the New (Al-Saleh Republic)
Al-Saleh Family Strategies in Ruling the Future Yemen

*

Al-Saleh Family
(Al) in Arabic stands for a family name. The goal of adding (Al) to the grandfather of President Ali Abdullah (Saleh) is to establish a new title like the ones before him such as Alahmar, which goes back to the family of Sheikh Abdullah bin Hussein Al-Ahmar. The title Al-Saleh makes people confused between the families of Saleh and Alahmar. Time has come for differentiation between the two.
The title of Al-Saleh, or the formation of a new family is the start for the Al-Saleh dynasty. The family is looking forward to be a family of kings and rulers of Yemen under the name (Al-Saleh), which can co-exist with the name of the Republic at least temporarily, or even the Republic of Al-Saleh dynasty.

Al-Saleh Charitable Society
In 2002 appeared in the Yemeni arena the Al-Saleh Charitable Society. It ushered to bringing the Saleh family to the top of social fund givers and charity work.

Al-Saleh Mosque and Al-Saleh Hospital
The second project which was announced by making the Al-Saleh Mosque. It’s duty was to use religious symbols, attract religious groups and different sects like Sufianism and Salafianism. Inviting senior preachers from outside Yemen to lecture in the mosque has become a tool to promote Al-Saleh in a large-scale.
Perhaps those who understood the propoganda later apologized for not accepting the invitation to preach in the mosque like Sheikh Abdul Majeed Al-Zindani and Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi.
The president used his position to attract those who are loved by the people and have a wide audience like Quran reciter Yahya al-Halili and Sheikh Muhammad ibn Ismail Al-Amrani to attend his mosque.
Al-Saleh mosque is merely a means of exploitation of Islam to promote for an individual and family, so, the motives and objectives are clear. If there was respect for the real Islam, there would not be Al-Saleh mosque at all. They could have named the mosque in the name of Yemen not in the name of an individual, therefore, not to promote the family, especially after the money spent on the mosque was taken from the people and not the family.
Along the same line was established Al-Saleh hospital and we may hear soon of Al-Saleh Medical Compound and the University of Al-Saleh or Al-Saleh Cultural Forum which will coordinate with other cultural and scientific centers in the country.
Al-saleh means a mechanism not for the president but for the sons of Saleh (the grandfather). They are tools for marketing and promoting Colonel Ahmed Ali Abdullah and the sons of Muhammad Abdullah Saleh who now do not see the promotion of Al-Saleh as for serving Ahmed alone, but them as well.
The Republican Guard was one of the units developed after the Al-Saleh agenda came in practice. The Special Forces was also created, and are held by Al-Saleh family.
National Security system, which is a device to collect intelligence information, is another institution held by the family.
Central Security is security for the country, but the Presidential Guard Forces are there to protect the president and the family. The Special Forces, National Security and Central Security all have a special relation with the U.S. forces, as this happened after the events of September 11. These security forces were not known before the September 11 attacks.

Security and Military Systems
It is clear that Al-Saleh family firstly tried to control security and military forces as they made them the fields where the sons work. The three sons of Mohammed Abdullah Saleh (president’s brother), hold more than three major security posts: the Special Guard, the Central Security, National Security as the president’s son holds the Republican Guard and Special Forces.
It provides a broad power and influence, but not a suitable mechanism for marketing as it is based on force and oppression.
The family realized that these institutions provide power and influence, but are not suitable for mass marketing and attracting different groups, that is why thery started working in the fields of religion and social work.
The usage of civil society organizations, the Educational Professions Syndicate, Altelal Club and Books Friends Society, Kanaan for Defending Palestine Organization and others are examples on how the Al-Saleh family is working outside the military field.

Finance
There are sources of funding without borders for the Al-Saleh family, topped with economic enterprises and the Agricultural Bank (CAC). The payment of salaries for a large number of employees from the government comes directly from the Al-Saleh family.
Also, numerous agencies and governmental businesses and authorities pay directly to the family.

Information & Media
The family has also been buying many of those who are involved in the media, journalists and writers as they also fund specific newspapers and printers who support the family.
Press plays official roles and on top of them is the newspaper of 26 September that promotes the Al-saleh projects throughout the country. They are also working on having numerous satellite channels. The establishment of (Al-Saleh family) satellite channels help spread their ideas. Al-Aqeeq Satellite Channel is mostly owned by Al-Saleh Family.
