The Interior Ministry plans to establish four branches of the counterterrorism unit in the provinces of Shabwa, Marib, Hadramout and Abyan.
It posted on its website on Friday that the move aims to tighten the noose around Al-Qaeda militants and comes within the major efforts being exerted to root the evil out.
The staffs of the branches will be prepared well at the same level as the staff o the main counterterrorism unit, it said.
The announcement coincided with a U.S. call for Yemen to do more on the fight against terrorism.
White House counterterrorism advisor John Brennan has urged during a telephone conversion with President Saleh to intensify anti-terror efforts.
The White House reported that the U.S. wants stronger action to thwart possible AQAP plots in Yemen, the U.S. and other countries.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, announced early last year when Yemeni and Saudi Al-Qaeda groups merged, has been described as more dangerous than the main Al-Qaeda group of Bin Laden.
The group has also been responsible for a series of plots inside Yemen and abroad, including mail bombs that triggered a global alert in late October.
In recent years, Yemen has launched large-scale operations against and a massive hunt for AQAP militants, mainly in southern and southeastern provinces.
Many suspects were killed, wounded and arrested. Some of the arrestees went on trials and received sentences including death ones.
