The ruling General People’s Congress (GPC) party announced on Wednesday a new draft amendment to be approved by Yemeni parliament on Saturday.
The GPC said that the constitutional amendments aim at political reforms, among them the legislative system and the local rule.
Al-Motamer website, run by the ruling party, reported that the constitutional amendments will enable women to have at least 44 seats in the parliament through extending the current seats in Yemeni parliament from 301 to 345 seats.
The other amendment according to the same source will reduce the period of the presidential term of office from 7 to 5 years, while cancelling the limit of two consecutive terms.
Lately, President Ali Abdullah Saleh called on international organizations to observe the upcoming controversial parliamentary elections planned for April 2011.
The announcement was made when he delivered a speech during the launch of the electoral campaign of the ruling party in Yemen's business capital Aden on Sunday.
President Saleh issued two weeks ago a republican decree appointing nine judges as the new members of the commission amid the condemnation of the opposition which demanded the commission should include members from it and the ruling party.
