Tens of people were injured when the security forces fired live bullets and teargas at a massive demonstration in Yemen’s southern Taiz province, independent media reported on Thursday.
At least 12 protesters were injured by live bullets, 4 in critical condition, and 13 others due to gas inhalation including women, it cited medical sources as saying.
Pro-regime forces intercepted the peaceful demonstration in downtown Taiz using high-pressure water and poisonous gas amid revolutionary escalation to call for the ouster of the remains of the regime.
Eyewitnesses also said that snipers were stationed on rooftops near the public security and post offices participating in firing and throwing rocks at the protesters.
Some southern provinces also saw protests marking the prisoner day. The protests were organized by the southern movement, Harak.
In the past few weeks, the Yemeni opposition started a new stage of revolutionary escalation to accelerate the ouster of the regime and put an end to a seven-month unrest that has largely affected the national economy and raised concerns about the country’s future. The escalation includes spreading protests to towns and all parts of the country.
