Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, summoned on Monday embattled Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh as battles were raging in the capital, Sana’a.
It is the first time since his arrival in Riyadh that Saleh is granted a meeting with the King.
According to sources within the palace, Saleh would have briefed the King on Yemen latest developments, announcing that he had vested vice-president Hadi with the necessary constitutional powers to sign and enact a transfer of power within the parameters of the GCC proposal. Under the agreement, Hadi would organize early presidential elections while agreeing to the formation of a coalition government in partnership with the Opposition. In exchange, Saleh, his family and close aides would be granted immunity from future prosecutions.
Although King Abdullah was said to have welcomed the move, a recent bout of violence in the capital is putting any transition deal in serious jeopardy.
Even the arrival of al-Zayani, the Head of the Gulf Cooperation Council and his repeated calls for a ceasefire could not prevent the escalation of violence in Sana’a.
U.N. envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar also arrived in the Yemeni capital on Monday hoping to push forward the signature of the latest GCC brokered proposal.
Despite recent efforts from the international community to extract Yemen from its several months’ power stalemate, all efforts have been in vain so far. And as renewed fighting is rocking the capital, Yemen’s future remains murkier than ever.
