At least five soldiers were killed after al-Qaida-linked militants attacked a military checkpoint in Yemen's portal city of Aden Yemen, coinciding with continuous battles against militants in the southern Abyan province.
26 september website, the mouthpiece of the Defense Ministry, reported eight terrorists were also killed when they carried out the attack on the checkpoint in south Aden, between Aden and Lahj.
"The militants were on two pickups when they attacked and the forces clashed with killing at least of them," the website reported.
One of the cars was damaged and other militants could run away onboard the second pickup, it added.
In recent years, al-Qaida has been active in south Yemen, mainly the business capital Aden, where security offices, patrols and checkpoints have been targeted and many reported killed. Militants also targeted the cars of officers killing many of them and their guards.
With direct support from the US, the Yemeni forces have been fighting al-Qaida in southern and southeastern regions, mainly Abyan, and in the past few weeks hundreds of militants have been killed.
People also formed popular committees that have been supporting the forces in the war.
In June, al-Qaida occupied some towns including Abyan's capital, Zinjibar, and since then they have become key strongholds.
