Strike has paralyzed the Aden port after Dubai Port World, the company that operates the port, failed to meet the demands of its workers who have been protesting for two weeks.
The workers say the company did not fulfill its promises regarding the raising of their salaries.
An official of the port who requested anonymity made it clear that the workers will go on their strike until their demands are met, pointing out that they want salaries equal to those paid to the workers of other ports run by the company. He referred that loading and unloading were completely suspended in the port.
Governor of Aden Waheed Rasheed held a meeting on Saturday with the worker unions of the port and discussed with them difficulties and challenges, stressing the importance of overcoming them swiftly. However, the meeting failed to end their strike.
DP World , the world's third-largest port operator in the world, runs the port in partnership with the Yemen Gulf of Aden Port Corp.
Both companies formed a partnership back in 2008 to operate and develop the container facilities at the Port of Aden within five years.
The deal signed on 2008 provides that DP World operates, develops the Aden Port, expand the depth of the container berth to 400 meters and increase its capacity to 900,000 containers.
However, Yemeni economists accuse DP World of deliberately disturbing Aden port due its fears of competition DP world in the region.
