The European Union announced on Monday that it is giving extra support of 18 million euro for Yemen, noting the donation aims to help the Yemeni people and government overcome the various challenges facing their country. In a statement released on Monday, the EU stated that the new donation will be assigned to boost various areas including democracy, civil registry, legal and decentralization reforms.
EU will enhance the aforementioned areas in Yemen through providing it with technical assistance and expertise, consultation, and required equipment, in addition to helping upgrade the training and qualification processes, the statement explained.
In this regard, EU Commissioner for Development Andre Piebalgs was quoted as saying that EU has supported the transitional process in Yemen since the beginning and this donation embodies its constant response to the Yemeni people's aspirations of a powerful, just, democratic state, one which enjoys good administration."
He pointed out that the program which is funded by EU will help Yemeni authorities to effectively deal with the people's needs and demands through boosting the essential centralization authorities, supporting providing people with the basic services at the local level, and enhancing the relationship between the government and citizens.
The EU, US, and the international agencies working in Yemen are, according to many analysts, seemingly lacking effective approaches to tackle the worsening humanitarian situation in Yemen. This is most evidenced in the fact that little has been done on the ground, despite the flow of the donations from multiple sides.
