The families of several Yemeni political detainees took their protest to President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi's residence this Sunday morning, demanding that their sons be immediately release from prison, where they have been languishing for over two years.
Back in 2o11, at the height of Yemen's revolutionary pro-democracy movement the security forces under strict instructions from the government arrested protesters which they felt were enticing violent behaviors.
While the government estimated it was merely maintaining order, rights activists argued the arrests were all unlawful as no official charges had been filed against any of the detainees.
Two years on and families are still lobbying for their release, threatening to take the matter to court.
Under Yemen legal system no person can be held in custody without being officially charged with a crime.
Late last May 20 of Yemen revolutionary political prisoners began a hunger strike movement in a bid to attract attention and publicize their plight.
HOOD, Yemen most prominent rights organization has alleged that the detainees have suffered ill-treatments by the hands of the security forces, ranging from torture to intimidation and battery.
In a statement to President Hadi the families asked for the dismissal of Attorney-General, Dr Ali Ahmed Aloaosh, whom they hold responsible for the arrests and detentions. They also asked that an independent commission be set up as to look into the matter and ensure that all crimes are duly investigated.
