Yemen coalition government approved on Tuesday following a cabinet meeting a national policy which seeks to address Yemen's IDPs problem.
Hit in 2011 by both a terror insurgency in its southern territories and a revolutionary movement, Yemen found itself having to deal with an estimated 507, 000 Internally Displaced People (UNHCR 2012 data).
Two years within its power transfer Yemen is looking to implement a comprehensive policy which will help identify goals and priorities as well as allow an effective response to displacement.
As per stated by Saba (the state news agency), Yemen IDPs policy will address the issue if internal displacement through three goals, "protecting civilians from involuntary displacement and preparing for any potential displacement, safeguarding and assisting internally displaced people during displacement and supporting displacement-affected communities, and creating favorable conditions for safe, voluntary and permanent solutions to displacement."
A special committee will be formed under the leadership of Prime Minister Mohammed Salem Basindwa.
But Yemen government is not alone in dealing with its IDPs crisis, UNHCR, as UN cluster lead for protection and camp coordination and camp management, shelter and non-food items, provides protection and assistance for: IDPs living in camps, with host communities or in settlements in the north; IDPs living in collective centers or within the host community in Aden in the south; as well as for IDPs who are starting to return home to Abyan Governorate.
Key activities include the monitoring of the protection environment to ensure access to basic rights and the provision of life-saving assistance.
