General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, the former Commander in Chief of the First Armored Division, one of Yemen most senior, prominent and well respected military men and senior advertise to President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi condemns on Thursday the deposition of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi by the armed forces.
The General, who in Yemen rose to fame when he decided weeks into the revolution to side with the people against the former President Ali Abdullah Saleh's regime, has always strongly expressed his support of democratic principles, such as self determination and freedom of expression.
And while millions of Egyptians were seen calling for President Morsi's departure over the past few days, Gen. Al-Ahmar estimates that the Egyptian Defense Ministry well outstepped its powers by directly intervening into the country's political life by forcing Egypt democratically elected government out.
The General wrote on his facebook page, "What has happened in Egypt is a military coup against democracy and the Egyptian constitution."
Within hours of taking control of the government, Egypt armed forces announced Egypt new constitution and government were no more, something Gen. Al-Ahmar said not only violate all democratic principles but the very spirit of 2011 Arab Spring revolutionary movement.
Gen. Al-Ahmar is a high-ranking member of al-Islah party, Yemen Sunni radical faction. Al-Islah regroups several sub-factions under its political faction, among which the Muslim Brotherhood.
