Local officials in Aden reported on Friday that a Haraki political activist (southern secessionist movement) was killed by the security forces in the southern seaport city of Aden this Friday when they raided his residence.
Mubarak al-Awadhi who lived in the popular district of Mansura, a stronghold of al-Harak movement in Aden was allegedly attacked by the security forces while in his home for no apparent rhyme or reason. Residents in Mansura already warned they would not allow the state to revert to such violent and lethal methods of repression to silence their calls for secession.
Officials rejected claims that excessive violence had been used, stressing they were only carrying arrest orders on identified dissident elements. Residents noted that police dispatch several men to Mansura to monitor the situation, following further rounds of arrest. A house believed to be housing several wanted activists were cordoned off.
Speaking on al-Awadhi’s death, police sources explained that when the activist attempted to resist arrest and flee a soldier opened fire on him, only intending to stop him, not kill him. Three other activists were also injured in the shoot-out.
It is important to note that this incident comes a day after al-Harak agreed to a truce in the southern province of al-Dhale, located directly north of Aden. Sources close to al-HArak have warned that al-Awadhi’s death would be understood as a further the central government intends not to negotiate but rather impose its political vision on Yemen southern territories.
