The Interior Ministry confirmed in a statement made to the press late on Monday that an estimated 55 alleged al-Qaeda operatives have been killed in a major air offensive across several southern and central Yemeni provinces.
The air strikes which began on Sunday, targeted al-Qaeda positions in Abyan, Shabwa and al-Bayda provinces and have said to be targeting terror training camps.
The drone strikes which have reportedly been carried out chiefly by the United States, have said to have inflicted al-Qaeda severe losses, both in terms of losses of life but also logistic.
With dozens of militants lying dead, such operation has already been dubbed Yemen’s biggest strike against the group since the country declares war on Islamic radicalism.
In a statement the Interior Ministry confirmed that the first round of air strikes, which took place on Sunday lasted for several hours. Preliminary reports have already established that at least three prominent al-Qaeda figures were killed on Sunday: Mohammed Salem Abed Rabbo al-Mashibi, Fawaz Hussein al-Mahrak and Saleh Said Mahrak.
Security sources have said under cover of anonymity that by targeting al-Qaeda chief leaders, officials aimed to sever the head of the snake, hoping the body would soon fall apart unable to sustain such fatal blow.
Officials have confirmed that once they have confirmed the identity of the dead a more detailed report will be made public.
It is important to note that this attack comes soon after Defence Minister, Major General Mohammed Nasser Ahmed, and his commanders returned from the US after a two-week visit where they discuss counter-terror strategy.
