The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has urged all factions to cease fire days after the UN special envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar quit his mission.
Benomar's resignation occurred after he had failed to salvage the political and power transition processes.
Reports said discussions have got underway to appoint a new UN envoy to Yemen.
The call for ceasefire comes amid expanding violence and fast deteriorating humanitarian situation.
Ban expressed deep UN concerns over the situation in Yemen where 2 in 3 citizens depend on aid.
In this context, planes have landed at Sanaa International Airport carrying humanitarian aid to the people affected by the latest developments.
Days ago, the Security Council approved a new resolution on Yemen calling on the Houthi militants to cede power, stop violence, evacuate public compounds and withdraw from Yemeni cities.
The resolution, adopted under Chapter Seven of the UN Charter, was drafted by the GCC countries which led a military operation against the Houthi militants and forces loyal to ex-president weeks ago.
It supported the military operation, included terms banning sending weapons to the militants and dissident forces and blacklisted Yemeni military and Houthi leaders.
