Fierce clashes between the pro-government resistance fighters and the Houthi militants in Yemen's city of Jawf bordering Saada, the stronghold of the Houthi militant group, local sources said on Friday.
Dozens from both sides have been killed and injured in the past 24 hours, the sources said, while adding that the pro-government fighters were advancing toward Saada after taking over the Al-Yatamah district.
Heavy weapons were used in the battles which coincided with persistent confrontations between the pro-government fighters and the Houthi militants in southern cities including Taiz, Aden, Dhale and Shabwa.
Reports have lately revealed that the Saudi-led Arab coalition which has been conducting airstrikes against the Houthis since March 26 sent back to Jawf local fighters who had been trained on the border between Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
The fighters are now leading the battles against the Houthis at a time when the coalition is seeking to build a new Yemen army led by chiefs who were lately appointed by president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.
The army will be from the north and the south 50/50 in accordance with the outcomes of the Riyadh conference for saving Yemen which run through May 17-20. The coalition is apparently seeking to take the battle to Saada to force the Houthis to retreat from other cities.
In Taiz, the Houthis with support from armed forces loyal to the former president retook the Jabal Al-Arous military base on the Sabir Mountain after shelling it with rockets for days, local sources said.
On Thursday, around 15 pro-government fighters and more than 50 Houthis were killed in the battles around the base, the sources said.
Also, sources said clashes continued in Aden, Dhale and Shabwa in the south where the Houthis lately advanced on frontlines taking advantage of a five-day humanitarian ceasefire. There were casualties from both sides.
