President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer arrived for a three-day visit to Yemen, the Saba news agency reported, as TVs revealed that the visit comes within international efforts to reach a humanitarian ceasefire in the country.
Maurer will meet with Houthi officials to discuss the humanitarian situation and required interventions by the ICRC, Saba quoted Maurer as saying.
Moreover, he will visit some areas and hospitals in order to have a close look at the impact of the months-long armed conflict, it said.
Around 80% of the Yemeni population are now in need of emergency aid due to the conflict which followed ousting the transition government by the Houthi militants.
Around 10 million need urgent medical help after the conflict including a blockade on all sea, land and air routes has been preventing all supplies from entering the country.
The blockade was part of the Saudi-led military intervention launched against the Houthis in late March.
Maurer's visit came a day after a delegation from the General People's Congress and the Houthi militant group has headed to Oman for talks over the crisis in the country.
The fresh talks come as the government forces with support from the Saudi-led Arab coalition are driving the Houthi militants and dissident forces from southern cities.
Since the conflict began following the ouster of the government by the Houthis early this year, talks have been held between the warring parties in Oman, Saudi Arabia and Geneva.
However, the talks could not introduce a solution to the conflict.
In mid-July, the forces retook the port city of Aden and, last week, they retook most of the parts of and almost all military bases and brigades in Lahj.
They are now fighting the militants in Abyan and are expected to retake the towns of Zinjbar and Shuqra in coming hours, sources within the popular resistance said today.
The Arab coalition is providing direct support to the forces during their battles including airstrikes on the militants, they said.
