UK's Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond announced on Sunday that a Briton who had been held hostage by militants in Yemen was freed.
According to a press release by the British Foreign Office, Hammond said forces from the United Arab Emirates released Robert Semple.
"I’m pleased to confirm that a British hostage held in Yemen has been extracted by UAE forces in a military intelligence operation. The British national is safe and well, and is receiving support from British government officials," he was quoted as adding.
Well-informed sources said Semple was working for an oil firm in southern Yemen when was abducted by suspected Al-Qaeda militants last year.
The UAE is participating in the Saudi-led bombing campaign against the Houthi militants.
The military operation was launched in late March in support of the UN-backed transition government which was ousted and forced out of Yemen by the militants and forces loyal to the former president.
Lately, the UAE sent ground troops that helped the Yemeni forces retake the southern cities from the Houthis.
